PROTECT YOUR VISION IN TODAY’S TECHNOLOGICAL WORLD

Fifty-eight percent of American adults report experiencing eye strain or vision problems as the direct result of using technology including computers/tablets, smartphones, and digital devices. Prolonged use of technology puts users at risk for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), which occurs when a person experiences vision and eye health problems related to near work when using digital devices. CVS can cause eye strain, dry eye, headaches, aches, and fatigue. With the increasing and extended use of technology by younger users, CVS may appear earlier than in previous generations.

Special Olympics is Looking for Volunteers

Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) is again offering free health screenings at the Special Olympics Wisconsin State Summer Games in Whitewater on Friday June 7, 2024. Opening Eyes is one of four health screenings being offered, providing vision assessments to SOWI athletes. Athletes in need of prescription glasses receive dress and/or sport/swim goggles, which are mailed to their local program manager about 3 months after the event. Athletes that do not require prescription glasses receive designer sun glasses when exiting the venue.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

As the New Year begins, it’s a great time for people across the state of Wisconsin to make a resolution to protect themselves from the “sneak thief of sight,” also known as glaucoma. Despite it being the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S., affecting over 3 million Americans, public understanding of glaucoma is limited. Because this extremely detrimental disease frequently attacks a person’s eyesight without early onset symptoms, many that are affected remain unaware they even have glaucoma.

Membership Renewals

WOA and AOA leadership is pleased to announce there will be no dues increase for the 2024 membership year with additional member services added for 2024. Easily renew online by logging in to your member profile.

If you wish to have your payment processed in the 2023 calendar year, you must meet the following deadlines:

Payments online via the portal on the WOA website must be made by end of day on Saturday, December 30, 2023.
Payments to WOA office via Check or Credit Card must be received no later than Friday, December 22, 2023.

CE Requirements for License Renewal

All Optometry license renewals were due December 14, 2023. CE totals for credits earned through WOA educational programs are now available on the website and may be viewed by logging in to the members’ only side of the WOA website. Thank you for making the Primary Care Symposium a Huge Success!

Thank you to everyone who attended The Wisconsin Optometric Association’s 2023 Primary Care Symposium! It was held at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells, November 3-4. This was the final education seminar provided by the WOA in 2023 and the last before the license renewal on December 14, 2023.

On October 13-14, 28 Doctors of Optometry from Wisconsin and surrounding states converged on The Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River for the 30th Annual Northwoods Retreat (known as Musky Hunt in it’s early years). Thank you to those who attended and celebrated 30 years with us!

2023 Spring Seminar a Success!

Thank you to everyone that attended - It was great to connect in-person for Spring Seminar! Attendance was up almost 30%. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the speakers - two new faces, Drs. Jessica Schiffbauer and Jessica Steen and Wisconsin Optometrist favorite, Dr. Leonard Messner. WOA wishes to thank all attending doctors, speakers, vendors and sponsors who made this event a great success! CE verifications will be emailed to participants in early May.

The 123^rd WOA Convention and Annual Meeting has come to a close, and what an incredible event it was! We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who joined us for Wisconsin's largest continuing education event for Optometrists and Optometric staff. Your presence and participation made this convention a resounding success.

From Thursday, September 28th through Sunday, October 1st, Optometrists statewide and farther gathered at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton, where we embarked on a journey of learning, networking, and growth. With 22 hours of exceptional continuing education opportunities, the event provided a platform for expanding ODs knowledge, honing their skills, and staying at the forefront of the ever-evolving field of optometry.

But the true highlight of the 2023 WOA Convention was undoubtedly the people who came together to make it a remarkable experience. The camaraderie, the exchange of ideas, and the passion for optometry were palpable throughout the event. It's this sense of community and shared purpose that sets our convention apart.
