November is Diabetes Awareness Month!

If left untreated, diabetes can have incredibly damaging effects on an individual’s vision and eye health. According to the American Optometric Association, diabetes is the leading cause of vision loss among American adults under the age of 74. This is due to diabetic retinopathy, which is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes that often has no obvious symptoms. This makes the role of eye doctors even more important because they provide a detailed examination of the eyes as part of comprehensive vision and eye health care services.

WOA recognizes November as National Diabetes Awareness month. Regardless of whether or not an individual has been diagnosed with diabetes, WOA members encourage citizens across Wisconsin to schedule a comprehensive eye examination with a licensed eye doctor as a component of their overall health care regimen.
